The perfect 2 week South Island itinerary
This New Zealand South Island road trip really has it all! Snowy mountains, beautiful lakes, stunning beaches, vineyards and even glaciers. This itinerary starts in Christchurch, heads south toward Aoraki/Mount Cook, Queenstown and Fiordland, then loops back north along the West Coast.
How long do you need for a New Zealand South Island road trip?
We recommend 2–3 weeks to explore the South Island at a relaxed pace, with enough time for scenic drives, hikes, campgrounds and the main highlights without constantly rushing. If you have more than three weeks, you should consider adding the North Island to your trip.
When is the best time to visit New Zealand’s South Island?
November to April is generally the best time to go, with longer days and better weather. December to February is peak summer and the busiest period, while March and April bring fewer crowds and beautiful autumn colours. Most of the great walks are closed during winter, but you will have the opportunity to go ski!
