One-Way 4WD Rentals Perth to Exmouth

Driving from Perth to Exmouth is around 1,250km direct, but once you add Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Francois Peron and the Ningaloo Coast (a lot of which require 4WD to fully experience), you’ll easily cover more than 2,000km. If you only have 10–14 days, driving all the way back to Perth can turn a relaxed holiday in an exhausting experience. We think the best option with 14 days is to rent a one-way 4WD camper and slowly work your way north and fly back from Learmonth Airport at the end. Make sure to check out our full Perth to Exmouth itinerary if you’re looking into a trip to WA’s Coral Coast!

Unfortunately relatively few camper companies offer this route. Someone eventually needs to get that vehicle back south, so even for those companies offering it, there will be relocation fees with your booking. We spent quite some time investigating which companies allow (4WD) one-way rentals, and have listed them below with our toughts  so you don’t have to spend all that time researching what your options are!

Your options for one-way 4WD rentals to Exmouth

Bonito Camper

We rented with Bonito Camper, a small family-run company based in Perth. Their fleet consists of well-equipped Toyota 4WDs, including LandCruisers and Hiluxes, designed for off-grid trips. Our setup had a rooftop tent, fridge, 270° awning, water, recovery gear and pretty much everything we needed for two weeks remote camping. They offered a flexible one-way drop-off to Exmouth, and it’s quite personal rather than a fixed depot-to-depot system, just send them your dates and ask what they can make work. This would be our pick if you want the small-company experience and a serious 4WD setup.

4xploring Rentals

4xploring Rentals is probably the closest alternative to Bonito and has one of the clearest one-way setups we found. Their fleet ranges from Toyota Prado and Hilux campers to larger LandCruisers, all equiped with proper off-road and recovery equipment. Perth to Exmouth is allowed with a minimum 10-day hire. Like Bonito, Kilometres are unlimited, which is not to be underestimated on a 2,000km+ roadtrip! We’d book here if you want a well-equipped 4WD but prefer a more structured booking process. Both 4xploring and Bonito offer quite upscale 4WDs at a reasonable price.

Wicked Campers

We don’t consider the bigger camper companies, but Wicked Campers is worth checking because they’re probably your cheapest one-way bet. Their range also has cheaper 2WD campers but also 4WD setups, from two-person campers to larger rooftop-tent vehicles sleeping up to five. They’re generally more budget-focused than the premium LandCruiser setups above, so definitely worth getting a quote if you’re on a budget. Expect less equipment and slightly more ‘used’ vehicles, but at a sharper price. They appeared very open to bargain so don’t take their first offer!

Exmouth Camper Hire

If you’re doing the road trip in the opposite direction, from Exmouth to Perth, have a look at Exmouth Camper Hire! They’re a small company based in Exmouth and offer one-way hires south to Perth. Their campers are 2WD Toyotas and don’t allow tracks with more than 3km of unsealed driving. That makes it a good option if you’re happy sticking to the more accessible parts of the Coral Coast, but not for our full Perth to Exmouth itinerary. If you’re travelling Perth to Exmouth, it’s still worth contacting them in case they need a vehicle relocated north around your dates.

Allstar 4WD Camper Hire

Allstar 4WD Camper Hire is another company worth having on your list, particularly if you want a Toyota Hilux rooftop-tent setup or a Prado/LandCruiser while staying in accommodation. Their standard one-way network focuses on Perth, Broome and Darwin, rather than Exmouth, so we wouldn’t count on them as your first option for this route. However, they do advertise to be open to alternative drop-off locations on request, so inquire to see whether an Exmouth drop-off or relocation works with their schedule. Their camper setups include unlimited kilometres, rooftop tents, fridge, water, recovery equipment and a large awning.

What if you just need a one-way car to Exmouth?

If you’re staying in hotels, caravan park cabins or other accommodation, it will be much cheaper to rent a one-way car. Major rental companies including Avis and Hertz operate from Learmonth Airport and allow one-way rentals from Pert, subject a one-way fee. This can be considerably simpler than finding a camper relocation, but that complexity will bite you back in finding accomodation along this remote stretch of coastline that is Perth to Exmouth. Also remember that renting a car labelled 4WD doesn’t automatically mean the rental agreement allows you onto beaches or remote tracks, so check the restrictions carefully if Francois Peron or Warroora are on your Perth to Exmouth itinerary.

Or drive back to Perth!

If you have the time, a return rental from Perth can save quite a bit of money. Camplify is normally one of our favourite ways to rent campers in Australia because you’re hiring directly from local owners and can often find some amazing setups for less than the large rental companies. The downside of course is that those hires need to be returned to the owner, making genuine Perth to Exmouth one-way trips difficult to find (but not impossible, some owners might offer it), but for an itinerary like our Perth to Esperance one, Camplify is the way to go!
